Using FrontPage

All our sites can be set up to support FrontPage 2000/2002/2003 Server Extensions if required.  If you are not going to be using FrontPage you should ask us to remove them if you have ordered them inadvertently.

FrontPage Extensions are 'WebBots' which provide the server side implementation of FrontPage and are the mechanism for invoking many of the interactive features built into FrontPage.  FrontPage communicates with the extensions via HTTP via a Remote Procedure Call (RPC).  When the server sees the 'POST' request addressed to the FrontPage server extensions it redirects the request to the appropriate 'WebBot'.

If you use FrontPage extensions on your virtual server you MUST only use FTP to upload scripts to the CGI directory.  Do not use FTP to upload your website as this is likely to destroy the extensions.

To publish your Web Site using FrontPage:

  • Get an open connection to the internet via your ISP.

  • Open FrontPage

  • Open your FrontPage web

  • Click the 'File' menu button, and choose 'Publish Web'

  • Enter your web address as www.<yourdomain>.co.uk, etc. and click 'OK' (or www.<yourname>.co.uk/ ~<username> to publish to your personal web if set up through the Administrators control panel).

  • If you want to only send pages that have changed since your last update, check the 'publish changed pages only' box

  • FrontPage will now contact the server.

  • Enter your FrontPage username 'webmaster' and password.

  • FrontPage will now publish your site to the web.

Since FrontPage was created for developing web sites in the Windows environment, some features are not currently available on our UNIX servers such as ASP/Access database functionality.  Such functionality can however be met by using our PHP and database options.
