Using FTP

After creating your Web Pages you can publish them using FTP.  If using Microsoft FrontPage you are advised to only publish your pages through FrontPage except for publishing scripts to your cgi-bin directory.

There are many FTP clients that you can use to upload/download files to and from your virtual server web space.  These include WS-FTP, CuteFTP and FTP Voyager.

Launch your FTP software and establish an FTP link - you will require the following information:

  • Profile Name - just a reference name that your FTP software allows you to save your FTP configuration to.

  • Host Name/Address - enter the host name of your virtual server account e.g. ftp.yourdomain.co.uk, etc.

  • Host Type - is the type of server that you are working with.  All our servers are UNIX based so this can be set to UNIX or you can leave the FTP software to 'autodetect'.

  • Username - your username on your virtual server.

  • Password - your password on the virtual server.  You can change this in the Administrator or User Control Panel.

Once you have logged onto the server the FTP program will display the directory structure of your virtual server.  You can transfer files to and from your virtual server by dragging files across or tagging files and then copy and paste.

By default, the files you upload using FTP are stored in your personal directory; the directory path is:

/home/sites/<yourdomain>/users/<username>

where <yourdomain> is the fully qualified domain name of your site and <username> is your username.

The Site Administrator can access and edit the site root content in the directory /web during an FTP session.  The site web root is accessible on the Web at http://<yourdomain>/   Site Administrators can edit their personal Web pages (if set up in the Administrators Control Panel) in the directory /users/<username>/web during an FTP session.  Personal Web sites are accessible at:

Site Users who are not Site Administrators (who have web space granted from the Administrators Control panel) can edit their personal Web sites in the directory /web during an FTP session.

Please make sure that when you transfer HTML and PERL scripts that you select the ASCII protocol, and when you transfer binary/image files you select the binary protocol.

Please also be aware that a quality connection to the internet is required for FTP.  FTP will timeout if the ISP you are using does not have sufficient bandwidth between their modem racks to the internet.  Beware of Free and 'cheap' ISPs which may be oversubscribed.

Secure FTP is also supported on our servers.
